Built in 2021 by engineers from Vilnius University of Technology, it’s obviously not a real portal like those in science fiction. However, beyond being a simple tourist attraction, it was created with the purpose of promoting reflection.

The portal that connects two countries

Although the portal isn’t a passage allowing people to move between nations, the device developed in 2021 does allow us to see in real-time what’s happening in the other country, thanks to technology and internet connectivity.

So, those who stop to contemplate the link from Poland can observe the same things as those doing so from Lithuania, sharing the same objective. This impressive display of technology is located in Lublin, Poland, allowing its residents to observe the streets of Vilnius, Lithuania, in real-time.

Both cities are 373 miles apart and showed great interest in installing this device, which presents itself as a circular high-definition screen connected to the internet.

Furthermore, it’s important to highlight that this portal is the first of its kind in the world, and its design took five years to develop.

What is the message its creator aims to convey?

Although the project was carried out by university students, the idea came from Benediktas Gylys, president of the homonymous foundation. Gylys announced from the outset that this device represents a digital bridge designed to unify and “overcome prejudices and disagreements belonging to the past.”

Therefore, beyond being a tourist attraction, this portal connecting Poland and Lithuania has a much deeper meaning related to the shared history of both nations.

Due to the success of the first portal, its creators are already working on designing new models that will be installed in other European and world nations.

Although they haven’t officially confirmed the news yet, it’s likely that the next two devices will connect Lithuania to two European islands. One of them will link Vilnius to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, and the second will connect the capital of Lithuania to London, England, United Kingdom.

This invention is truly fascinating, and even though it’s not a real portal, knowing how daily life is in nations completely different from our own becomes captivating. Hopefully, such inventions can be installed in Latin America, allowing us to see other cities in the region in real-time.
